It’s Tuesday – Paycheck vs. Purpose

“Our visions begin with our desires.” ~ Audre Lorde

O.K., Fam, it’s Tuesday again.  And you still hate your job.

As your Begin Coach, I feel it my duty to share with you a piece of sage advice: Get another job.

Duh. I know, right? But there is one thing that you may not know. Because unlike others who have been searching for a gig for months, some even years, you – safe and miserable in your cushy 9 to 5 cubicle – have no idea...You’re the one employers are looking for.

That’s right, folks like me who have colorful artistpreneurial resumes with gaps of employment history or those laid off and unable to find work in the past few years are being straight up ignored by employers. Why? Because it’s a buyer’s market right now. With unemployment at 9.4% and rising, many employers are bypassing the jobless and focusing on those still working, because they feel these survivors are the top performers.

You hear that, Mr. or Ms. I-Got-A-Job-I-Can’t-Stand,  the deck is stacked in your favor. Now, how do you go about finding your dream job?

I say, begin with your passion. Applying for a job that is just like the one you have is not going to get you closer to living your life’s purpose.

So, while you have the stability of a steady paycheck, ask yourself – What excites and intrigues you the most? Then, do your research. Not on your boss’ dime or time, though. Be smart about it. In fact, for more tips on how you should or shouldn’t go about your new job search, check out this story: Tips for Job Searching While You Are Employed.

The tips make sense. That’s why I shared them with you. But before you begin making moves, Fam, remember this — Don’t just ditch one job and replace it with another.  Have your Come To Jesus meeting with yourself first.

You owe it yourself to find your life’s purpose.

Fam, do you agree or disagree with me? If so, how?

  1. Steve Jobs would amen with you, I think. The passion question is so key.

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t loose faith. I’m convinced the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. …If you haven’t found it, keep looking. Don’t settle.”

    Way to remind, Monice.

    • thanx, nichole. as always when i write on my blog, i’m writing for two audiences – my readers and myself. the passion piece is paramount. you can’t find or remain committed to your life’s purpose without it.

  2. I feel you Monice…I feel you. I could say more but you already understand.
